The site is currently owned by Adams County and consists of fenced, unoccupied land. Previous uses of the site included a private shooting club from approximately 1959 to 1970, a 16-acre historic landfill operated by private parties in the 1970s, and a firearms training facility used from 1993 to 2012.
The firearms training facility consisted of a north shooting range and an adjacent "situation range," a south shooting range and adjacent skeet shooting area, and a SWAT team training facility.
Adams County is committed to protecting public health, safety, and environment and began evaluating the site in 2015 to determine a cleanup action plan. Working with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and a hired environmental consultant, the county has developed a plan with two phases:
- Building demolition and soil cleanup on shooting range
- Capping of landfill with groundwater monitoring
In 2018, the county completed demolition and soils cleanup and is now prepared to commence re-grading and capping of the landfill. This phase is expected to be complete in mid-2020. Consideration for a solar array to be placed on the site after grading and sitework are complete is under investigation.
Prior to the demolition and soil cleanup, a public informational meeting was held on Wednesday, April 25, 2018. Prior to the landfill cleanup and cover construction, a public informational meeting was held on Thursday, Aug. 15, 2019.
Both meetings were held at the Todd Creek Golf Club, 8455 Heritage Dr., Thornton. Both presentations are available for viewing from the links under “Project Documents” below.
