Five County Races Within Recount Margins

According to unofficial election results of the 2017 Coordinated Election, five contests are within recount margins. They are:

  • City of Aurora Council Member At-Large (second position)
    • Dave Gruber (13,552)
    • Tom Tobiassen (13,505)

  • Bennett Fire Protection District No. 7 Ballot Issue 4D
    • Yes/For (877)
    • No/Against (873)

  • Byers School District RE-1J Ballot Question 3B
    • Yes/For (258)
    • No/Against (258)

  • City of Northglenn Council Member Ward 2
    • Joyce Downing (642)
    • Danielle Henry (642)

  • Wiggins School District RE-50J Board of Education at Large (second position)
    • Dale E. Flemming (297)
    • Mike Miller (298)

Before election recounts can begin, a risk-limiting audit must be completed, followed by a canvass of the election to certify the results.

“We have been monitoring the closeness of these contests since election day,” said Stan Martin, Adams County Clerk and Recorder. “Local contests are just as meaningful as federal elections and the closeness of these contests shows that your vote really does matter.”

Two of the contests within the recount margin are tied. If the City of Northglenn Council Member Ward 2 contest remains tied after the recount, per Colorado State Statute 1-11-102, a lot drawing will be conducted by the Adams County Canvass Board to determine which candidate will be elected. If Byers School District RE-1J Ballot Question 3B remains tied after the recount, per Colorado State Statute 1-11-102.5, it will be considered to have failed.

Four of the contests are shared with one or more counties, including Arapahoe, Douglas, Weld and Morgan, meaning that all counties must certify the election results before recounts can begin. Adams County is working with these counties to set a single date for all recounts. Mandatory recounts must be completed by Dec. 7.

For a recount to be triggered, the difference in votes must be less than or equal to one half of one percent. Visit www.adamsvotes.com for more information.
